Bosscha Observatory in Lembang, Bandung, West Java, will split the 1000-2000 hood lights to the residents who live around Bosscha. The goal is to prevent malicious light pollution which complicates observations of celestial objects in the observatory.
Hood lights were distributed to residents in a radius of 200-300 meters from Bosscha. The cone-shaped hood lights are made of aluminum. By using the hood, light bulbs will not be scattered toward the sky so that it can prevent light pollution.
The effort is expected to encourage other people who do not accept the hood, to make their own light hood. Lampshade in homes around Bosscha alone is not enough to make observations in Bosscha avoid light pollution. Ideally all the lights in London wearing a hood. Thus, the observation is not obstructed light pollution.
As a result of light pollution around Bosscha, many of which can be observed 10-20 years ago, now can not be observed anymore, especially the star whose light dimmed.
Since built in 1923, became a central Bosscha astronomical research in Indonesia. The observatory also became the first modern observatory in Indonesia.
Another alternative that can still observe celestial bodies is to build a new observatory. Suitable location for it, located near Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara. At that location, the number of nights that can be used for observations of celestial bodies over 200 nights. Moreover, in these locations there is no air turbulence so as to facilitate observation.
However, to realize the funds to hit, because it takes a very large fund to build the observatory Modern.
Learning through the observatory proved important in the history of civilization. Thanks knowledgeable developed nation always has a high knowledge Observatory Modern and functioning properly.
